Cristina Sabaiduc’s first project, Romandin – Autumn/Winter 2009, was inspired by the interrelations of fashion and art throughout history and the blurred line between them. The diminishing genre of handcrafted techniques within industrial culture, and the contrast between these aesthetics, was the starting point of this experimentation. The Romandin collection reworks typically strong ‘masculine materials,’ such as magnets and ropes, into feminine silhouettes and statement pieces through delicate application and handiwork. Fabric strips were knitted together, iron fillings were magnetized to create live texture, and nylon rope was knotted using an array of techniques to question the habitual notion of what constitutes a textile, fibre or material.

Romandin – Autumn/Winter 2009 was debuted at |FAT| Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week in April 2009.
